Luxury properties can be found throughout San Diego County but the number of San Diego mansions renting for $10,000 a month and up has doubled since the pandemic with La Jolla commanding the most expensive rents. According to a February 12 article in the San Diego Union Tribune, a recent La Jolla listing - a 9,200-square-foot mansion at 6436 Camino de la Costa - is going for $85,000 a month, and a 4,800-square-foot home on Neptune Place is going for $75,000 a month. There are roughly 35 rentals in the county with asking rents of $30,000 and up, with the majority in La Jolla. The article said luxury rentals may used to entice in-demand workers to come to San Diego. It’s not unheard of for CEOs of companies to get a free luxury rental. The New York Times reported last year the chief executive of New York’s Museum of Modern Art was provided a rent-free, tax-free $6 million condo above the museum. One agent that works in that space said sometimes an affluent renter is an entertainer, like an actor who is temporarily doing something in Los Angeles but wants to live down here, or an athlete. Big contracts for the San Diego Padres would seem like a likely candidate but it might depend on the player. It was announced Monday that outfielder Jurickson Profar had resigned for a one year, $1 million deal. Renting the La Jolla property for a year would be $354,000, which probably wouldn’t make sense for Profar though.
