Many of my clients are downsizers. They have spent much of their life living and loving a larger home. They may have a bunch of children, work at home or have lots of family guests from out of the area. As they look at retirement that multi-story, four bedroom, half acre home with the pool no longer makes sense. They just don't need the space. That is where I come in.
The solution often is to sell the large home and downsize into a a property that meets current and future needs. A smaller home typically means lower bills and less upkeep. There is also the potential windfall that comes from selling your larger home and buying something smaller, particularly if you have lived there for many years and let the equity and appreciation build. Exciting and scary at the same time, this move can give some people financial freedom when they retire. If you have always lived in suburbia but thought it would be fun to walk to dinner and the local park this could be the time to make that change too. Modest bungalows or lovely condos in a more walkable area could be the next step. Downsizing doesn't mean a negative change. For most of my clients it has given them a fun "next chapter" as they enjoy travel and engaging their community as opposed to pulling weeds and paying to have the pool replastered.
If you are considering downsizing call me and let's talk about what you can expect to sell your home for in this market and, as importantly, what your next real estate step will be.
