Well, who knew? I thought it was illegal to ride bicycles on sidewalks. Apparently that is not the case in most of San Diego County. The state allows cities to address that issue and, according to a recent article in the UT by David Garrick, only four local cities (Carlsbad, Escondido, National City and Vista) have banned it.
Have you even been walking on a sidewalk down by the beach and almost gotten run over by a bike? It has happened to me and many of my runner friends more times than I can count. With the increased emphasis on biking and walking to work it is interesting that more hasn't been done to make our area bike friendly without encouraging cyclists to take to the sidewalks.
Groups like icommute support efforts like Bike to Work Day which was held this year in May and they have a very cool bike map so you can preplan your route. Should more cities ban riding on the sidewalks. As a runner I think the answer is "yes" but what is the alternative? People are going to ride where they feel the most safe and for those who aren't confident enough to ride in the road I guess in many areas that only leaves the sidewalk.
